BIG ouchie!! So this time they used staples. BUMMER!! It's OK, I will pull them with the help of a friend. So good news, bad news. She had a partial cranial-cruciate tear (doggie ACL) that was reinforced with suture, and they realigned her kneecap so it won't slip any more. Bad news, her knee joint is WAY worse. She has advanced arthritis on this knee. Her kneecap used to slip medially and on the inside aspect of her sulcus (knee groove) and the back of her patella, she has very little cartilage and exposed bone. Not good. But we will deal with that as it happens. She will be MUCH more comfortable. She should be able to do short hikes and play, but she will never be a runner/sprinter and will probably need NSAIDs just like a grandma. Thank god she's cute with a sweet personality.
Interestingly enough, her new surgeon is a DVM, PhD who is doing research on chondrocyte engineering using stem cells obtained from torn meniscus and synovium. I consented to allow a Dolly Mae specimen to be cloned for research. If her cells proliferate, they will grow in a matrix to recreate meniscus tissue. She will email photos. If her study is published, she will notify me. So my pup may be immortalized and will be published. Cool, pup gets a paper just for being a gimp!!
